E950 (“Standard Test Method for Measuring the Longitudinal
Profile of Traveled Surfaces with an Accelerometer
Established Inertial Profiling Reference”).

Optical encoder based distance measurement system with
longitudinal distance measurement error of 0.1% or less.
•Laser Sensor: Vertical
displacement measured using non-contact Class 3B laser
range-finder sampling at a minimum frequency of 16
kilohertz. (Faster sampling sensors, such as 32-64 kHz
available for special applications). Laser sensors
unaffected by pavement texture, color, reflectivity or
ambient lighting. Laser resolution (typical): 0.00032;
vertical measurement accuracy (typical): 0.0005 inches.
Optional wide footprint sensors available (e.g. LMI/Selcom “Roline”
laser with 3 kHz sampling). Class 3B laser safety
criteria applicable to all profiling system lasers.
•Accelerometer Sensor:
Aerospace grade accelerometer sensor rated for up to +/- 5
g; resolution. Accurate to +/-0.0001g. Hardware and
software supplied for in-field procedure for static
re-calibration and zeroing of accelerometer.
•Profiling System Core
Electronics Module: Dedicated profiling system data
collection module manufactured in ISO 9001 facility.
Single module connects all profiling system sensors with
real time diagnostics monitoring system health. Core
electronics module is portable, modular, and ships express
worldwide for prompt in-field replacement.
•Operating Speed:
5 -70 mph (8 -112 kph) with Class I data (true 1” / 25 mm
sampling) at all speeds.
•Profile Feature and
Wavelength Preservation: Proven ability to measure and
preserve fine surface features more accurately than any
competing system. Profile wavelength preservation from
~< 1 foot (<.3 m) to in excess of ~760 feet (231.6 meters).
With optional survey subsystem, long wavelengths
preservation is thousands of feet (meters)--theoretically
infinite.
•Repeatability & Accuracy:
Guaranteed to meet or exceed industry standards and
specifications (including AASHTO M328, R056, and Texas
1001-S).
•Compliance with
Specifications: Complies with all commonly used agency
specifications and test methods for use of inertial
profiling systems for ride quality testing applications.
Profiling System Hardware
•Mount Hardware:
Professionally engineered mount hardware for attaching
profiling system to front, rear or mid-point of many
standard vehicles. Portable systems attach to standard
2 inch (5.08cm) square receiver tube and operate from host
vehicle’s 12V power supply.
•Flexible DMI Hardware:
Hardware supplied for attachment of high resolution distance
measurement interface to rear wheel of host vehicle.
Dedicated lug-extenders or flexible wheel collets supplied.
•Sensor Adjustment: Dove-tail
hardware supplied for horizontal and vertical adjustment of
laser / accelerometer sensor modules.
•Adaptor Hardware: Custom
hardware design and fabrication available for profiling
system attachment onto customer specified vehicle (front,
rear, or mid-vehicle mount--not all vehicles supported).
•In-Vehicle Workstation:
Pedestal mount system and power supply for operator
computer. Alternate suitcase enclosure available with
internal power supply and direct connection to profiling
system.
Profiling System Software
•SSI Profiler Software Suite:
Comprehensive software routines for calibration, collection,
analysis, reporting, and repeat run comparison/verification.
On-screen instructions for system calibration and data
collection. All software fully integrated with Microsoft
Windows 7 Professional and prior supported versions.
Software licenses supplied for use on profiling device and
desktop computers. Free license for agency and
academic users.
•Adjustable Parameters:
Encrypted raw profile data is infinitely rewritable with
different analysis parameters as selected by the user.
All data parameters required by agency specifications are
supported.
•Real Time Display:
Real time display of longitudinal stations (chainage) and
vehicle speed (in English or Metric), profile traces, and
GPS position during data collection.
•Multiple Data Collection
Triggers: 3 data collection triggers: (i) SSI
Reverse Direction Trigger (proprietary procedure that
collects exact stations without pre-marking test sections),
(ii) Electric Eye, and (iii) On-the-Fly.
•Event Marking: Entry of
location notes by electric eye or push button, with
post-collection text entry by operator.
•Urban Area Data Collection:
SSI Continuous Collection feature suspends collection of
profile data at speeds less than 5 mph (8 kph), records
position, and resumes collection when system resumes above 5
mph (8 kph).
•Pause Data Collection with
Data Retained: System pauses data collection manually
or with electric eye trigger. Data from paused
sections retained for reporting separately or combined with
non-paused areas.
•Multiple Profile Indexes:
Profile data reported in user selectable indexes:
International Roughness Index (IRI, segmented or
continuous), Mean IRI (MRI), Half Car Ride Index (HRI) and
Ride Number (RN).
•Localized Roughness:
Multiple outputs of localized roughness supported: profilograph must grind bump/dip template, IRI thresholds,
and Texas 1001-S. Dimensions of localized roughness
calculated by length of defect and location of peak
amplitude.
•Variable Filtering:
User selectable filtering parameters as required by
specifications (e.g. high and low pass filters).
•Single Track Systems
Generates Dual Track Reports: Patented functionality
of single sensor systems to report dual wheel tracks
(separately collected in either direction).
•Data Formats: Outputs
numerous useful or required formats: PDF, ERD and PPF
(compatible with ProVal), PRO, Excel (CSV or auto-populated
in templates supplied by SSI), raw unfiltered profile, and
ProScan).
Operational & Physical Attributes
•Temperature: Operating
ambient temperature range: 32° to 120° F (0 -49 °C).
•Humidity: Recommended
operating humidity should not exceed 90 percent (noncondensing).
•Moisture: Profiling
system components impervious to moisture. Quality of
measured profile degrades with excessive moisture (active
rainfall, standing water or ponding on surface that can
interfere with laser readings).
•Dimensions: Varies by
system; example: CS9300 Portable System: 60”L
x 8”W x 24”H (152cm L x 20.3cm W x 61cm H). Contact
SSI for particulars on other systems.
•Weight: Varies by
system; example: CS9300 portable system (mount hardware):
~75 lbs (~34 kg).
•Electrical Ratings:
•Input: 7-14 volts DC.
•Operating: ~3 amps.

•Operator Training: On-site
assistance with system installation and configuration is
available worldwide, as is operator training.

•Real Time Diagnostics:
Profiling system health monitored by real-time diagnostics
to verify integrity of main profiling system electronics,
all sensors, and data communication interface.
•Software Updates:
Self-installing software updates automatically overwrite
prior versions. Updates distributed by Internet
download or issued with automatic update notification
(Internet connection required).
•In-Field Component
